Perfect Crumble

Everyone's crumble recipe is slightly different from others. A little less flour, more sugar, oats, almonds they all make their appearance in different versions of the "perfect" crumble recipe. Then there is the matter of what fruit to use? Apples are traditional but if you haven't tried cherry crumble then you haven't lived! Blackberries, gooseberries, pears, blackcurrants ..... It seems all fruits make good crumbles. Varieties of fruit also cause confusion. Is a Granny Smith better than a desert apple?

Crumble recipes came into being during the Second World War when some ingredients for baking were in short supply. The basic crumble recipe used commonly available ingredients which quickly give a nutritious pie at low cost. It also has the advantage over many pies because it avoids the tricky business of making pastry.

This site explores all the above variations on the "perfect" crumble from the very basic and traditional recipe to the more exotic. We try the recipes time and time again to get them perfect so have no worries there. Use the red navigation boxes, at the top of each page, to move around this site or select from the list of options below.
