Apple Crumble

Apples are the most traditional filling for a crumble and with good reason. Apples are nutritious, tasty and cheap. When cooking apples are in season, they are often available for free.

The choice of apple is key. Cooking apples are the best option because they contain more moisture compared to  desert apples. Cooking apples also retain their shape  better when cooked. The tart taste, combined with some sugar makes them an excellent choice.

CHOICE OF CRUMBLE TOPPING
This classic apple crumble recipe goes very well with the traditional crumble topping. But the choice is yours. Simply select a crumble topping from the drop down box below and then click the "SELECT A TOPPING BOX". The recipe will automatically change to include your chosen topping. Your choice of crumble topping will then appear in every recipe in this site but you can change this in any of our crumble recipes.

INGREDIENTS
Our choice of apple for this recipe is the Bramley apple. It retains much of its texture when cooked and is readily available in gardens and the shops.

Ingredient

How Much

THE FILLING
Cooking apples (4 medium) 900g / 2lbs
White or brown sugar 60g / 2ozs

THE CLASSIC CRUMBLE
Self-raising flour 280g / 10oz
Brown or white sugar 140g / 5oz
Cooking margarine 140g / 5oz

PREPARATION
Turn the oven on now to 180°C - 350°F - Gas Mark 4.
Peel the apples, cut them into quarters, remove the core then cut each quarter into six or eight slices. Each slice will break down when cooked so it's not too important to get them equal sized.

RECIPE INSTRUCTIONS
1. Place the cooking margarine and flour into a largish bowl and blend them together. We found it easiest to use hands but a fork or food blender does the job as well. Continue mixing until it forms mainly evenly sized crumbs. This takes 3 to 5 minutes.
Add the sugar and blend that in as well. This will make the mixture even more crumbly.

2. Evenly spread the apples into an oven proof dish. They should be around 2 to 3cm (an inch) deep. Sprinkle the sugar over the apples. Evenly spread the crumble mixture over the apples. The crumble mixture should be about 2cm (¾ inch) deep. Place in the middle of the preheated oven for 40 minutes.
Serve hot with scoops of ice cream.

Any left over apple crumble can be put in the fridge and eaten cold later. The very best accompaniment to cold apple crumble is cream. Great for breakfast!
